Health and Care Professions Council Overview

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) regulates 15 health and care professions, including paramedics, radiographers, dietitians, and hearing aid dispensers. Notably, the updated HCPC regulations regarding standards of conduct, performance, and ethics are effective from 1st September 2024. These healthcare standards, which you can read about here https://www.hcpc-uk.org/standards/standards-of-conduct-performance-and-ethics/, outline the expected professional conduct for registrants. They detail what the public should anticipate from their health and care professionals and assist the HCPC in evaluating the character of individuals applying to their Register. The standards also guide the HCPC's actions when concerns are raised about a registrant’s practice. The core standards of conduct include the following headings:  

1. Promote and protect the interests of service users and carers  

2. Communicate appropriately and effectively  

3. Work within the limits of your knowledge and skills  

4. Delegate appropriately  

5. Respect confidentiality  

6. Manage risk  

7. Report concerns about safety  

8. Be open when things go wrong  

9. Be honest and trustworthy  

10. Keep records of your work
